The Power of Letting Go: Balancing Between Routines and Spontaneity
In high school, a friend left a quirky note in my yearbook: ‘May you always learn from others’ mistakes, just like I do.’ I never fully embraced her wisdom, not because it’s flawed, but because my learning style is uniquely mine. Much like my cooking escapades, where I diverge from recipes, and my approach to exercise, tailored to my body’s whims. When my son questioned my unconventional workout routine, I claimed it’s for health, but truthfully, I stick to my ways because they work for me. And when they don’t, I’m not afraid to let go.
Witnessing my son echo this independence brings a grin to my face at times. But how can I expect him to follow my path when he’s busy charting his own?
Yet, even in my free-flowing journey, I occasionally tether myself to the ground, crafting a schedule. There’s a certain magic in routine – providing a sense of security, predictability, and the illusion of control. Yes, an illusion, but one real enough to help me accomplish tasks. Especially when my son utters the word ‘bored,’ and I find myself orchestrating a dance of structure and rigidity. Eventually, this too loses its charm, and I return to the fluidity of going with the flow.
Mastering the art of letting go is the most powerful skill you’ll ever acquire. It’s a skill that can be learned through small, intentional steps – releasing the tiny things, the ‘small stuff’ as Richard Carlson wisely said, because in the grand scheme, it’s all small stuff.
I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of this unique balance. Sometimes, the rigidity of a schedule grounds me, helping me navigate the demands of daily life that involve making money for example. Other times, surrendering to the ebb and flow of spontaneity opens up space for creativity and joy. It’s a delicate harmony, a rhythm I am still learning to sense and sync. As life’s goes on with its challenges, ups and downs, filled with the responsibility of being a human, I adjust my steps accordingly. Embracing the dance of life, with its twists and turns, has become a continuous journey of self-discovery and growth. So, I continue to let go when needed. Life is smart. It will always unfold on its own.
